What
I would play if I was 4 or 5
I would be in the dramatic play area and I would be
playing church. I would put on a suit coat and get a book for the Bible. I
would stand in front of my friend and tell them they were the members and I was
the pastor. I would preach and pray in the fashion of my pastor. No adults
necessary because we will be pretending were different members of the
church.
Quotes
"“Free the child's potential, and you will
transform him into the world” Dr. Maria Montessori
Dramatic play permits children to fit the reality of
the world into their own interests and knowledge. One of the purest forms of
symbolic thought available to young children, dramatic play contributes
strongly to the intellectual development of children (Piaget, 1962).
Symbolic play is a necessary part of a child's
language development (Edmonds, 1976).
"...the key to developing self-regulation is
play, and lots of it. But not just any play.....'mature dramatic play';
complex, extended make-believe scenarios, involving multiple children and
lasting hours, even days....dressing up in firefighter hats and wedding gowns,
cooking make-believe hamburgers and pouring nonexistent tea, doing the hard,
serious work of playing pretend." - Paul Tough, New York Times Magazine,
The School Issue: Preschool (9-27-09)
